The best things to do in Horse Cave, Kentucky, are touring Hidden River Cave right under downtown, seeing the free American Cave Museum and heading into Mammoth Cave National Park. Horse Cave is a town of 2,212 people and the largest city in Hart County, in Kentucky’s Cave Country.

The town grew around a Louisville and Nashville Railroad station built in 1858, on the condition it be named for the nearby cave. It renamed itself Caverna in 1869 and switched back in 1879, because the railroad wouldn’t change the station’s name. In the late 1800s an underground stream in the cave powered a dynamo, making Horse Cave one of three Kentucky cities with electric lights.

Hidden River Cave

The cave runs right under downtown, and two underground rivers flow more than 100 feet below the surface. The hour-long tour crosses the world’s longest underground swinging bridge. It ends in Sunset Dome, a huge chamber streaked orange and yellow. The nonprofit American Cave Conservation Association runs it.

★ Good to know Walk-ins are welcome, but it’s about 325 steps each way, so it isn’t wheelchair accessible; pets are allowed.

American Cave Museum

This is Kentucky’s only museum devoted entirely to caves, karst, groundwater and cave conservation. Two floors of interactive exhibits cover Kentucky geology and cave life. It’s at the same Main Street address as the cave.

★ Good to know Admission is free, and the museum and sinkhole overlook are handicap accessible even though the cave tour isn’t.

Hidden River Cave Off-Trail Adventure

If the walking tour isn’t enough, the cave also runs a three-to-four-hour off-trail trip with helmets and headlamps. It’s for ages 10 and up, with a four-person minimum.

Mammoth Cave National Park cave tours

Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world, with more than 426 miles surveyed. The park takes in much of western Hart County, and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tours range from the 30-minute Discovery Tour to the two-hour Historic Tour and the Domes & Dripstones Tour.

★ Good to know Park entry is free, but tours can sell out weeks ahead, so reserve on Recreation.gov and arrive 30 minutes early at the visitor center.

Mammoth Cave above ground

The park’s surface is worth a day on its own. There are more than 80 miles of hiking trails and 60 miles of horse trails. You can canoe or kayak the Green and Nolin rivers, and the dark skies make for good stargazing.
