The best things to do in Leavenworth, Washington, are walking the Bavarian-style Front Street, seeing the Nutcracker Museum, and hiking along Icicle Creek and the Wenatchee River. Leavenworth is a city of 2,263 people in Chelan County, on U.S. 2 at the east foot of Stevens Pass.

This was a Great Northern Railway and sawmill town that lost the railroad offices to Wenatchee in 1925. In 1962 a group called Project LIFE set out to revive it, and in 1965 the Chikamin Hotel reopened as the Edelweiss, the first building redone in the Bavarian style. A design review board still enforces the look, down to the fast-food signs.

Front Street and the Bavarian village

The whole town center is built to look like an Alpine village, with painted facades, a gazebo and Front Street Park in the middle. Kris Kringl, a Christmas shop open since 1986, sits at 907 Front Street. Nearby, The Cheesemonger’s Shop sells international cheese, sausages and wine, and will pack a picnic.

★ Good to know Leavenworth drew 3.4 million visitors in 2024, so weekday mornings are the easiest time to walk it.

Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum

Arlene Wagner founded this museum on Front Street in 1995 from her own collection. It now holds more than 9,000 nutcrackers across two floors, from medieval carvings to modern collectibles, plus prehistoric nutting stones. A 17-minute video near the entrance sets up the collection.

★ Good to know Plan on 30 to 60 minutes; there’s no elevator, but both floors cover every era.

Christmastown and the Village of Lights

More than half a million lights go up downtown and stay on from Thanksgiving through February. From late November to Christmas Eve, the gazebo has free live music, and the Festhalle has crafts, a gingerbread house display and photos with Santa. The lights themselves are free.

★ Good to know January and February keep the lights with far smaller crowds, and U.S. 2 backs up badly on December weekends.

Waterfront Park

A flat trail loop follows the Wenatchee River right below downtown, through riverbank forest with benches and interpretive signs. Small beach inlets are good for a summer swim. It’s also a spring birding spot and a place to watch salmon heading upstream in fall.

★ Good to know Walk down Commercial Street from 8th Street; the trail starts at the bottom of the hill, and dogs are allowed.

Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery

When it opened in 1940 on Icicle Creek, this was the largest fish hatchery in the world. It raises 1.2 million spring Chinook salmon a year, and more than 5 miles of trails run through pine forest and meadow on its 180 acres. The grounds are open every day of the year.

Icicle Gorge Loop Trail

This 3.9-mile, hiker-only loop follows both sides of Icicle Creek through old-growth timber on easy grades, with interpretive signs along the way. It starts at the Icicle Gorge Trailhead, about 15 miles up Icicle Road into the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.

Leavenworth Reindeer Farm

About a mile from downtown on the Chumstick Highway, this farm lets you walk in among the herd and feed reindeer by hand after a short talk. Tours take about an hour and run year-round. November and December tours add a visit with Santa in the barn.

★ Good to know There are no walk-ins; book timed tickets online, two to three months ahead for the holidays.

Leavenworth Adventure Park

Washington’s first alpine coaster opened here in 2023 on the hill on the southwest side of town, with 2,700 feet of track. The park also has a 27-foot climbing wall and gemstone mining, and it’s open year-round.

★ Good to know It’s at 9342 Icicle Road, on the way to the fish hatchery and the Icicle Creek trails.

For food and drink, Andreas Keller serves rotisserie chicken, schweinshaxe and sausages with live music under 829 Front Street, and Icicle Brewing Company pours ales and lagers at 935 Front Street, while Lake Wenatchee State Park’s clear, mountain-ringed lake is up the Chumstick Highway past Plain.

Why is Leavenworth, Washington, Bavarian?

It chose the theme to survive. After the railroad left in 1925 and the mills closed, the town’s Project LIFE committee adopted a Bavarian look starting in 1965, modeled on Solvang, California. A design review board still enforces it.
