Things to Do in Millersburg, Ohio

This 28-room Queen Anne mansion, four blocks north of the square, is the Holmes County Historical Society’s museum and is listed on the National Register. Rooms are filled with Victorian furniture, paintings and county history, and you can tour on your own or ask a volunteer. Downstairs, the Sieverdes Millersburg Glass Museum shows the rare glass John Fenton made here between 1910 and 1912.

★ Good to know It’s closed January and February, open weekends in March and Tuesday through Sunday afternoons from April through October. It isn’t wheelchair accessible because of the historic building.

This mostly flat, paved rail trail runs about 15 miles through Holmes County into Knox County. It’s Ohio’s only companion buggy trail, so bikes and walkers share it with horse-drawn buggies. It follows Killbuck Creek past Amish farms, woods and fields, with signs about local heritage along the way.

★ Good to know Millersburg is a main trailhead with parking and restrooms, and downtown shops and food are close by.

Downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places and accredited by Main Street America. The Holmes County Courthouse anchors the square, and the streets around it hold artisan shops, galleries, antiques and places to eat.

★ Good to know Millersburg Brewing Company, open since 2012, brews on site and has its taproom downtown on East Jackson Street.

The hotel has been open since 1847, and it’s the third-oldest continuously operating hotel in Ohio. It has Victorian-style rooms, a tavern and a quilt retreat center, and President Grover Cleveland once stayed here.

★ Good to know Even if you aren’t staying, stop in for a meal at the tavern and a look at the old photos.

A short drive east in Berlin, this center is the best introduction to Amish Country. The guided tour centers on Behalt, a 265-foot circular mural that tells the history of the Amish and Mennonites. There’s also a Conestoga wagon, a one-room schoolhouse, a video, a bookstore and local crafts.

★ Good to know Go early in your trip, since the tour gives context for everything else you’ll see in the county.

Near Walnut Creek, this working farm lets you tour two Amish homes, a barn and a schoolhouse, with local guides explaining the culture. You can also take a buggy ride and visit the animals.

★ Good to know Fall is a good time to go, when the kitchen is busy with baking and canning and the fields are full of corn shocks.

This 160-mile scenic route links Millersburg with Berlin, Walnut Creek, Killbuck, Loudonville and other villages. It winds through farm country, wooded hills and river valleys, with buggies and roadside stands along the way.
