Things to Do in Williamsport, Indiana
The best things to do in Williamsport, Indiana, are the 90-foot Williamsport Falls, the carved sandstone of Fall Creek Gorge, and Portland Arch near Attica. Williamsport is a town of about 1,950 people and the seat of Warren County.
William Harrison platted the town in 1828 and named it for himself. The Wabash & Erie Canal ran on the far side of the river. Around 1852 Williamsport dug its own connecting channel and earned the nickname “Side-Cut City.”
Williamsport Falls
Fall Branch drops about 90 feet over a sandstone ledge between the old river side of town and the newer railroad side. The rock forms a natural amphitheater, and a wide trail leads down to the streambed. Warren County calls it Indiana’s highest waterfall, and there’s a picnic platform and shelter.
★ Good to know Flow depends on rain and is often light, so come in spring or after a wet spell. You’ll get wet if you walk behind the falls.
Fall Creek Gorge Nature Preserve
Fall Creek has drilled round potholes into the sandstone here, using trapped stones as a grinder. The 165-acre preserve also holds fossil footprints from the Carboniferous period. Two loop trails total about 1.5 miles, and NICHES Land Trust has owned it since 2021.
★ Good to know It’s open dawn to dusk December through October, closed in November for deer control, and wading and swimming aren’t allowed.
Portland Arch Nature Preserve
About 5 miles south of Attica near the town of Fountain, a small stream has cut a natural bridge through a wall of sandstone. The 435-acre preserve is a state nature preserve and has been a National Natural Landmark since 1973. A self-guiding trail from the first parking lot leads to the arch.
Downtown Attica
Attica sits just across the Wabash River and grew fast after the canal reached it in 1847. Its downtown historic district holds 50 older buildings, from the 1853 Revere Hotel to the 1935 post office. Paul Dresser is believed to have written Indiana’s state song nearby in 1897, and the river bridge carries his name.
Big Pine Creek and the Wabash River
Big Pine Creek is Warren County’s paddling stream, with whitewater sections when the water runs high. The Wabash River along town is used for boating and fishing.
★ Good to know Creek levels swing with the season, so check conditions before you put in.
Also in town
The 1907 Warren County Courthouse is on the National Register, and Harrison Hills Golf Club in Attica is a public 18-hole course dating to 1924.
Is Williamsport Falls the tallest waterfall in Indiana?
It drops about 90 feet, and Warren County bills it as the state’s highest. Visit Indiana lists it as the second tallest, so the title is disputed.
Does Williamsport Falls always have water?
No. Flow has dropped since the 1800s, when it powered a mill, and the falls are often quiet in dry weather. Spring and the days after heavy rain are best.
Can you swim at Fall Creek Gorge?
No. Wading and swimming are prohibited, and visitors must stay on the trails. The preserve is open dawn to dusk except in November.
