Things to Do in Chelsea, Michigan

Actor and Chelsea native Jeff Daniels founded this professional theatre in 1991 to stage new American plays with Michigan artists. It works under an Actors’ Equity small-theatre agreement, so the actors are pros, but the house is small and close to the stage. The current seasons lean toward smart comedy.

★ Good to know It’s at 137 Park Street, a block off Main, so plan dinner downtown and walk over.

Waterloo is the largest state park in the Lower Peninsula, at more than 20,000 acres just west of town. It has 11 inland lakes, beaches, campgrounds, cabins, a yurt and a long trail system for hikers, riders and mountain bikers. The landscape is glacial: bogs, wetlands and mature oak-hickory forest.

★ Good to know A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.

Start your Waterloo visit at this DNR visitor center at 17030 Bush Road, about three miles west of downtown. The exhibit hall covers Michigan geology and habitats from the Ice Age to today, and trails, a bog walk and a nature play area start outside.

★ Good to know It’s open weekends most of the year and daily in summer, and closed from mid-November through December, so check the DNR page before you go.

Northeast of town, this 11,000-acre park is known for a chain of fishing lakes and more than 40 miles of multi-use trail. The 17-mile Potawatomi Trail loop is a Southeast Michigan classic for hikers and mountain bikers. Silver Lake and Halfmoon Lake have the swimming beaches and picnic areas.

★ Good to know Parts of the Potawatomi Trail have been rerouted for erosion work, so follow the temporary signs; the Halfmoon Lake day-use area closes each year from November 1 to April 1.

Downtown was listed on the National Register as the Chelsea Commercial Historic District in 2011, with 61 contributing buildings. The four-faced clocktower at 310 N. Main was built for the Glazier Stove Company, and it once held the factory’s water tank. Across Main, the 1906 Welfare Building gave Glazier’s workers a pool, billiard hall and theater.

★ Good to know The 1880 Michigan Central depot on Jackson Street is part of the same walk.

The historical society bought the 1853 Boyd House at 128 Jackson Street in 2014, right across from the old train depot. The museum collects Chelsea’s stories, from the milling families to the stove works. It’s run by volunteers and keeps short hours.

★ Good to know It’s open Saturday afternoons, plus Thursday evenings in summer during Sounds & Sights.

Every Thursday evening in June and July, downtown turns into a free festival with music and street acts on about 10 stages. Expect bluegrass, rock, jazz and folk, plus magicians, jugglers and a chalk-art stage for kids. It’s run by the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce.

★ Good to know It runs 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., so it’s an easy add before or after a Purple Rose show.

This independent bookstore has served Chelsea since 1989 and sells new and used books with handwritten staff picks. In April 2025, about 300 residents formed a human chain to pass its 9,100 books to the new shop on Main Street. It’s now at 119 S. Main.
